Easy-to-understand, comprehensive comms plans with clear messaging, direction, and timings.
All done without reinventing the wheel. Or giving a two hour presentation.
Words that work because they’re written by someone who actually understands how people read.
Media and social media content, explainers, annual reports, brochures, award submissions - basically, if you need a writer for any sort of copy, that's where I come in.
The unglamorous stuff: statements, lines, Q&As, internal notes, media handling, sorting out muddled messaging, stopping people saying things they shouldn’t. Or dealing with the fall-out if they already have.
No headless chickens or theatrics. Just a clear head and advice based on decades of dealing with high profile issues.
I work directly with organisations, either owning the work from end-to-end, mentoring a more junior team on delivery, or providing top level strategic or crisis consultancy.
I also integrate easily with agencies looking for additional senior support.
I don’t waste time and I don’t waste budget.
Large developments and Local Plans can reshape a place for decades. They’re also dense, technical and hard to navigate. Most communities don’t have the time or tools to understand what’s being proposed, let alone respond in a way that councillors, officers or the Planning Inspectorate will take seriously.
Clear, considered, senior communications support can help communities engage confidently and constructively.
Build a clear narrative people can use
Communities often know something feels off, but struggle to articulate it. A factual, balanced narrative avoids traps like anger, misinformation, and speculation which only lead to accusations of of Nimbyism.
Create the tools people need to understand what's happening
Simple guides, templates, example objections, maps, visuals, briefing notes - all plain English, all designed to make understanding easy.
Support constructive mobilisation
Websites, surveys, social content, local media engagement. Credible, grown‑up communication that helps people organise themselves collectively for more impact.
Engage councillors and regional decision‑makers
Smaller developments - and most of the follow‑on approvals for bigger ones - are now signed off by planning officers, not committees. That means the usual “call‑in” routes have gone, and communities have fewer formal ways to get things in front of councillors. Larger schemes can still reach committee, but only if they meet tighter criteria. So influence has to happen earlier and more clearly, through media, social media, and direct briefings.
Prepare communities for Regulation 19 and Examination
Soundness‑based representations, evidence gaps, issues for the Inspector, and how to avoid the common mistakes that weaken submissions.
Pause the Plan, owned buy the North Huntingdon and St Ives Cumulative Impact Group, is a district‑wide response to major (city-sized) development proposals in Huntingdonshire. The activity included:
The group’s work was also cited in the council’s own Local Plan presentation. See www.pausetheplan.co.uk
Tin Hat is my independent practice - you work directly with me. For larger projects, I collaborate with trusted colleagues at The Visibility Bureau www.thevisibilitybureau.co.uk to provide additional capacity, and also with specialist design and photography support.
Every project is different, so the work is tailored to the community, the scale of development and the stage of the planning process.
I can help you understand what’s being proposed, communicate clearly, mobilise constructively and respond confidently.
Get in touch if you’d like to talk through what’s happening in your area.
